Disney has finally given us a sneak peek at the live-action Lilo and Stitch remake, and I have to say, it’s just a tad bit unsettling.
Last week, we caught a glimpse of How to Train Your Dragon undergoing the same cash-grab, live-action treatment. Now, it’s Disney’s turn to join the party. Yesterday, they dropped a 30-second teaser featuring our favorite blue alien, Stitch, as he indulges in a bit of Godzilla-esque fun. He’s seen stomping through a sandcastle replica of the beloved Disney castle, along with some typical sandy creations. Aside from a brief shot where our CGI buddy interacts with the release date—mark your calendars for May 23, 2025—there’s not much else to chew on. It’s a pretty minimal first look, to say the least.
The movie’s official description doesn’t stray far from its roots. It outlines the story of Lilo, a lonely human girl, and Stitch, her alien companion crafted to be a destructive powerhouse. Chris Sanders returns to lend his voice to Stitch, while the directorial reins are handed to Dean Fleischer Camp, of Marcel the Shell with Shoes On fame.
As for the rest of the cast, we have newcomer Maia Kealoha stepping into the role of Lilo, and Sydney Agudong from On My Block will portray her older sister Nani. Zach Galifianakis, known for The Hangover, takes on the voice of Jumba, with Billy Magnussen from Game Night playing Pleakley. Hannah Waddingham, celebrated for her role in Ted Lasso, is also part of the lineup, although her role remains a mystery. However, it wouldn’t be a stretch to guess she might play the Grand Councilwoman.
With the premiere less than a year away, it’s safe to say a full trailer is on the horizon. Meanwhile, Disney isn’t slowing down, aiming to rake in holiday profits this year with Moana 2, which releases this week.
