Most fans might think that the Scream series was reaching its end after Melissa Barrera’s departure, but Spyglass Entertainment and Paramount Pictures aren’t slowing down. They’re moving forward with a reimagined seventh installment, promising to bring back Sidney Prescott and introduce her family to some intense challenges. And now, it’s been revealed that Isabel May will take on the role of her daughter.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this move seems to be about embracing the popular ‘legacy sequel’ trend, aiming to save the series from dwindling interest. For most viewers, the Barrera situation might not make much of an impact, but the absence of Jenna Ortega could be a bigger disappointment, especially for the casual fans who adored her character.
Isabel May, known for her roles in “1883” and “Young Sheldon,” is reportedly in discussions to join the project. With a release date set for February 27, 2026, production should start rolling soon. Kevin Williamson, the writer behind Scream 1, 2, and 4, will be in the director’s chair. It’s a bit of a surprise that Guy Busick is back to pen the script, given his work on 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream 6. Originally, Radio Silence planned to exit after the last film, but after some backstage shake-ups, Christopher Landon of “Happy Death Day” fame was initially linked to continue before plans changed drastically.
The 2022 film aimed to breathe new life into the franchise without starting from scratch. It played cleverly with the ‘legacy sequel’ concept, serving commentary on Hollywood’s tendencies. Scream 6 took a different path, which most audiences enjoyed. Many fans are thrilled to see Neve Campbell return as Sidney Prescott, even if it means she’s caught in Ghostface’s dangerous web once more.
For the characters portrayed by Barrera and Ortega, these shifts mark the end of their story arc within just two films… unless events draw them back years down the line, with bygone issues and feelings revisited. Scream 6, however, wraps up their storyline nicely, providing a satisfying conclusion for fans who aren’t thrilled about the recent changes.
