I’m diving into a review for Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island, so I reached out to Polygon Treehouse’s co-founder, Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou, for a chat about the game. Let’s get into it!
PS4Blog: Good morning! It’s great to have you back with us. How have things been?
Alex: Thank you! It has been a hectic few years since our last indie game, Röki, was released. I’ve been enjoying exploring mythology and folklore from a fresh perspective with Mythwrecked. Rather than delving into Scandinavian stories, we’re reimagining what Greek gods might be like in today’s world!
PS4B: Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch on December 5. What can you tell us about this new adventure?
Alex: We’re calling Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island an ‘explore-o-story’ game. You’ll step into the shoes of Alex, a backpacker taking a break from the hustle and bustle of modern life, only for an unexpected storm to strand them on an ancient, forgotten island. During your journey, you’ll befriend Greek mythology’s gods, help them recover their lost memories, and seek a way back home.
PS4B: How long have you been working on this project, and how much has it evolved from its initial concept to the final version we’re about to see?
Alex: It’s been about three years since I first started on this idea. The fundamental concept was pretty much in place early on, with core mechanics like radar treasure hunting and memory flashbacks remaining unchanged. What did change significantly, though, was the ‘Story Sandbox’. This feature focuses on dialogues with the gods and tracks how the storyline unfolds. It went through several iterations, and I’m quite happy with the final result. It really immerses the player in an evolving narrative.
PS4B: Röki got a physical release last time. Is that something you’re considering for Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island as well?
Alex: I absolutely loved that we had a physical release for my first indie game and am a big fan of it. As for Mythwrecked, there’s nothing concrete I can share right now, but it’s definitely something I hope to see happen somewhere down the line.
PS4B: We’re almost out of time, but is there anything else you’d like to add?
Alex: Just a big thank you for taking the time to read about our game! If you have a love for cozy games, mythology, adventure, or mystery, then Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island might be right up your alley. We hope it turns out to be an indie adventure you’ll remember!
