In an unexpected twist for Tron enthusiasts, it’s revealed that Nine Inch Nails will be crafting the score for the upcoming Tron: Ares. The film’s director is confident this choice will enhance the movie’s “industrial” vibe.
Announced in August, the decision to have Nine Inch Nails on board took many by surprise — especially given that Tron: Legacy boasted an iconic soundtrack composed by Daft Punk, which often overshadowed the movie itself in terms of acclaim. In a chat with Empire, director Joachim Rønning explained the reasoning behind this bold move, saying, “By enlisting Nine Inch Nails for the music, we’re aiming for a sound that’s a touch grittier and more industrial.”
Rønning elaborated further on this vision by saying, “I wanted a clear contrast between The Grid and the real world. In this regard, Nine Inch Nails seamlessly fits into the new Tron universe we’re building.” Unlike its predecessors, Tron: Ares brings the action to our own reality instead of the digital domain known as The Grid. This shift warrants a fresh musical direction, though the film’s portrayal of our world will be crucial in justifying this choice.
While there are undoubtedly video game elements at play, Rønning stresses the importance of a relatable human story. “For any narrative, I prioritize a compelling emotional foundation. This film will likely surprise audiences with its emotional depth and its exploration of the cost of being human.” This theme resonates significantly amidst the rising prevalence of AI, offering an amusing juxtaposition when considering a movie populated by digital characters donning neon-lit costumes.
Fans should mark their calendars, as Tron: Ares is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 10, 2025.
