Things have been pretty low-key on the Dragon Age: The Veilguard modding scene until recently. You might have come across a few mods that tweak the game’s atmosphere to a slightly darker vibe or speed up the character creation process. But now, it seems like we’re in for some exciting changes, with a slew of new mods taking the scene by storm thanks to a nifty new tool at their disposal.
If you swing by the Nexus Mods page for the game today, you’ll notice an emerging lineup of mods that are utilizing an alpha version of the ‘Frosty Mod Manager.’ This toolset, devised by a crafty group of modders from the FrostyToolsuite Discord server, is designed for those eager to dive deeper into the modding world of Veilguard.
At this stage, the tool is mainly being used for cosmetic changes like altering game textures. Early examples showcase LexTypeC bringing back the Dragon Age Origins font, Izzli making tweaks to clothing, and sajere1 swapping out Davrin’s party menu image for a less shouty version of him.
Furthermore, this tool is turning out to be quite handy for breaking down some of the game’s player restrictions. For instance, modder Tellah9 has managed to eliminate specialization limits for each class, and Yeulia has a mod that makes maxing out your faction reputation a breeze.
Padme4000 has also jumped on board, using the tool to silence the annoyingly persistent noises of the dialogue wheel. It’s a welcome change for those moments when you’re agonizing over which sarcastic comment to make.
However, there’s a catch—using the Frosty Mod Manager requires obtaining an encryption key for the game. This necessity poses a legal risk, as distributing anything that might bypass EA/BioWare’s software encryption can be problematic. It’s partly why the manager’s GitHub page and many mod-related comments advise against directly seeking the encryption key from modders.
Exercise caution, as with all modding endeavors—using this tool comes with its own risks. If you prefer to play it safe, it might be wise to wait for potentially safer modding tools to emerge. There’s no certainty, but we’ve seen similar advancements with tools for Baldur’s Gate 3 modding.
