About a year back, I embarked on the journey of creating 3rd Party 64 episodes for various Army Men games that had made their mark on the Nintendo 64. Coincidentally, it was around that same period that The Video Game History Foundation unveiled a Christmas-themed commercial for Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, which happened to be one of the games I was diving into.
This synchronicity sparked an engaging discussion with Frank Cifaldi, the director of VGHF, about a fascinating collection they had just acquired from Michael Mendheim, the creative genius behind the Sarge’s Heroes series. By the end of our chat, my inbox brimmed with a trove of documents related to the development of the Army Men series, causing my project to grow in scope and ambition. Fast forward to late summer 2024, Frank extended an invitation for me to join an episode of The Video Game History Hour. It was an opportunity to sit down with Mendheim and delve even deeper into the stories behind his games, offering perspectives I had never anticipated.
This particular episode of 3rd Party 64 is a blend of clips from that enlightening interview and the invaluable information derived from the documents provided by The Video Game History Foundation. Without their dedicated efforts, this extensive coverage of the games simply wouldn’t have been possible.
But hold on, there’s even more!
As I delved deeper, I quickly realized I had uncovered a wealth of information about Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes that was too vast to fit into the primary video. This led to the creation of an additional video highlighting what I believe are the nine most intriguing, previously unknown facts from my research. You can catch this video over on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
