NVIDIA has made waves at CES 2025 by announcing that its cloud gaming service, GeForce NOW, will soon be available on several VR platforms, including Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3 and 3S, and Pico headsets.
However, it’s important to note that the current news doesn’t relate to VR-specific gaming through the cloud. Instead, it’s all about bringing traditional games that are usually enjoyed on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and handheld devices to these VR headsets.
For those using Vision Pro, Quest 3/S, and Pico devices, game streaming through GeForce NOW will become possible through web browsers once the platform rolls out its version 2.0.70 update, expected later this month. NVIDIA assures gamers that with this update, they can enjoy the full spectrum of NVIDIA’s advanced features, like ray tracing and NVIDIA DLSS. The games compatible with gamepads can be projected onto a “massive virtual screen,” providing a unique gaming experience for users with VR headsets.
One of the attractive aspects of NVIDIA’s service is that it provides some level of free access, along with more enhanced access plans through daily passes or monthly subscriptions. The GeForce NOW library is quite extensive, boasting over 2,000 titles.
This isn’t the first time cloud gaming has made its way to standalone VR devices. Back in 2022, Pluto VR launched a cloud gaming service on Quest, known as PlutoSphere. However, this service was removed in early 2024 after Meta decided to crack down on unapproved cloud streaming apps.
In a related development, Microsoft was permitted to introduce its Xbox Cloud Gaming and Game Pass to Quest towards the end of 2023, expanding gaming possibilities even further in this space.
