Pokémon Go fans, get ready for some excitement as the Unova Tour event introduces an exciting new feature. The legendary Pokémon that graced the covers of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, known as “White Kyurem” and “Black Kyurem,” are making their grand debut in Pokémon Go. This much-anticipated appearance celebrates the beloved fifth generation of Pokémon.
Players in Los Angeles and New Taipei City will be the first to witness these spectacular Ice/Dragon types during exclusive events from February 21st to 23rd. But don’t worry if you’re not in those areas, as these legendaries will become available globally from March 1st to 2nd.
To catch these rare Pokémon, trainers need to engage in challenging raid battles. These battles will reward you with “Volt Fusion Energy” for creating Black Kyurem or “Blaze Fusion Energy” for forming White Kyurem. This mechanic might feel familiar to those who attended last summer’s Pokémon Go Fest, where a similar process was used for the fusion of “Dusk Mane Necrozma” and “Dawn Wings Necrozma.”
For the fusions, you’ll need a Kyurem and either Zekrom or Reshiram. Kyurem will determine the stats and, if applicable, the shiny status. If your Kyurem knows the move Glaciate, you’ll unlock special moves: “Freeze Shock” for Black Kyurem through fusion with Zekrom, and “Ice Burn” for White Kyurem when fused with Reshiram. We’ve reached out to Niantic to clarify if Kyurem caught during the event will automatically know Glaciate to make the fusion more seamless.
While the special energy required for fusion will initially be exclusive to the in-person events, trainers can still participate in these raids remotely, up to five times daily during the weekend. However, only those attending locally will receive the much-needed energy.
Once caught, these legendary Pokémon will each showcase a special background themed after Pokémon Black and White. Reshiram will boast a striking Pokémon Black design, while Zekrom features a Pokémon White theme. Kyurem’s background can vary, and if you manage to fuse two Pokémon with different backgrounds, you’ll be treated to a unique third design.
Get ready, trainers, because this event promises to be legendary in every sense.
