Every time we turn around, it seems another game gets shelved, and this time, it’s PlatinumGames’ mysterious Project G.G. This game, with its Ultra Man vibe, never really had much detail shared with us.
Remember back when Project G.G. was first announced? It was 2020, and I wouldn’t blame you if it slipped your mind since we’ve heard hardly anything since then. And with Hideki Kamiya, the director and co-founder of PlatinumGames, bidding farewell to the studio in late 2023, the fate of Project G.G. was naturally up in the air. Now, the chances of it being released seem even slimmer. If you wander over to PlatinumGames’ website, you’ll find a list of 10 games they’ve been part of, including well-known titles like the Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. They’ve recently also added a surprise announcement for Ninja Gaiden 4.
Curiously, a bit of digging with some internet sleuthing tools, like the Wayback Machine, shows that the list once included 22 titles. This roster featured licensed games such as Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and The Legend of Korra, along with solo projects like Madworld. Even the rather unfortunate Babylon’s Fall had its spot. Though these games still have their dedicated pages, they’re no longer visible on the current site configuration (shoutout to Eurogamer for catching that). Project G.G. was among those removed, but unlike others, it doesn’t have a page anymore—its URL takes you back to PlatinumGames’ homepage.
This removal all but seals the deal—that Project G.G. isn’t going to make it, which isn’t much of a shocker given Kamiya’s departure over a year ago. It’s been somewhat apparent where PlatinumGames’ focus lies of late, especially with the noticeable shift in their team dynamics. However, the reveal of a new Ninja Gaiden offers a bit of hope, suggesting the studio will keep things going for a bit longer.
