Reports have surfaced that the French voice actors for Apex Legends are standing their ground against signing a deal that would let their voices be used for training AI systems. This news comes from Pascale Chemin, the voice behind Wraith in the French version of the popular battle royale game. Chemin took to Twitter to share that a certain publisher—almost undoubtedly Electronic Arts—tried to include a contract clause that would leverage the actors’ voices for AI training. While the game and publisher aren’t explicitly named, all signs point toward Apex Legends and EA.
Adding fuel to the fire, it seems that 31 other voice actors involved with the project have also declined to sign such an agreement. They’ve collectively authored a letter to the publisher, firmly conveying their decision.
Chemin voiced these concerns, stating, “If we don’t act together now to ensure that a protective clause regarding our voices is incorporated into our contracts—not just for us, but as a standard in all video game dubbing studios—we’ll be in big trouble,” as translated by ResetEra.
She continued, “Refusing work nowadays seems irrational. Many of us are already struggling to find jobs and are increasingly facing financial hardships. Yes, a paycheck would be appreciated. But this isn’t just about working; it’s about contributing our skills to train the very AI that might replace us in the future. We’re being asked to support what we fundamentally oppose. It’s like shooting ourselves in the foot—essentially being asked to champion AI.”
