Sony has just shaken up the virtual reality scene by announcing a permanent price drop for the PSVR 2 headset, starting next month. Previously priced at $550 since its debut nearly two years ago, the PS5 and PC-compatible device will soon be available for $400.
The announcement comes on the heels of the PSVR 2’s two-year anniversary, which passed with little fanfare and no mention during Sony’s recent State of Play event. This significant price cut will apply to both the standard PSVR bundle—which includes the headset, two Sense controllers, and headphones—and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle, which launched at $600 back in February 2023.
It’s worth noting that Sony has offered some enticing deals on the PSVR 2 before. For instance, in November 2024, the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle was marked down to an astonishing $350, suggesting that future discounts might be even more attractive.
Sony’s latest pricing announcement highlighted a robust lineup of PSVR 2 content. Current offerings include epic experiences like Skydance’s Behemoth, Metro Awakening VR, and Alien: Rogue Incursion. Plus, there are exciting upcoming games such as Aces of Thunder, Dreams of Another, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Midnight Walk. Despite this, Sony hasn’t fully committed its in-house resources to the PSVR 2.
While they’ve released a few first-party titles like Horizon Call of the Mountain, and VR modes for popular games such as Gran Turismo 7 and the recent Resident Evil installments, it pales in comparison to the support given to the original PSVR released in 2016. Back then, first-party gems like Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Blood & Truth were part of an impressive catalog.
Sony did throw a bone to PSVR 2 users by launching a PC Adapter for $60 last August, enabling players to dive into SteamVR games like Half-Life: Alyx and Fallout 4 VR. However, this move hints at a slow but steady shift away from tying the PSVR 2 exclusively to the PS5.
Looking ahead, upcoming discounts could spur even more sales growth as seen during the recent holiday season. Such price drops might entice more PS5 owners to explore the existing library of outstanding games and tap into the continuous stream of third-party titles. A discount similar to the 42% seen on Black Friday could bring the PSVR 2 price down to a compelling $232, making it a tempting choice for holiday shoppers.
Update (February 27th, 2025): We’ve corrected the previously reported Euro price; it’s €450, not €550.
