Sony has rolled out a new update for the PlayStation VR2 App, enhancing its compatibility with SteamVR content and addressing a significant concern: controller tracking issues. This update, which introduces a feature to effortlessly evaluate Bluetooth connection quality, is designed to help players better understand how well their VR2 controllers are interacting with their computers.
Let’s go back a little. When the app launched in August 2024, excitement quickly turned to frustration for many gamers. For the first time, PSVR 2 users could dive into the world of SteamVR games, only to encounter persistent controller tracking problems. This stemmed from an important factor: the essential PSVR 2 PC adapter doesn’t have built-in hardware for controller connectivity. Instead, controllers must link directly to a PC via Bluetooth, which isn’t always smooth sailing.
The trouble with Bluetooth connections is that the quality can significantly differ depending on the adapter. Additionally, the location of the adapter in the computer and the presence of other Bluetooth signals in the vicinity can massively impact connection quality. Sony has provided a list of supported Bluetooth adapters and troubleshooting advice for those grappling with weak connections. Yet, even those who picked up the recommended adapters have reported ongoing issues.
With the new v3.0 update, the “Check Bluetooth Connection Quality” option gives users invaluable insights into their controller’s link to the PC. This should enable gamers to pinpoint if a faulty Bluetooth connection is behind their tracking woes. If not, there may be other environmental factors at play, like reflective surfaces or unusual lighting conditions.
Additionally, this update resolves a bug that caused delays in controller vibrations and includes some performance and stability enhancements. The previous update, v2.5, came out last December and was among the first attempts to alert users to Bluetooth connectivity problems affecting controller tracking. This newer version has taken those efforts a step further, making it easier than ever for users to tackle these issues head-on.
