Pragmata recently garnered significant attention by securing 466 votes, surpassing heavyweight contenders such as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Interestingly, these titles are all expected to release within the next year. Pragmata’s success in the polls isn’t a mere coincidence; since its 2020 unveiling, the game has consistently captured the interest of Famitsu readers, frequently landing within the top three in recent years. You’d have to flip back to a September 2023 issue of the magazine to find it missing from the top 10 most anticipated games.
These voting numbers, while impressive, lack backstory. Over the past five years, we’ve had only fleeting glimpses of Pragmata through visually striking cinematics and short game snippets, making it challenging to pinpoint exactly what captivates Famitsu readers. I’ll confess that the initial reveal piqued my curiosity. However, its tumultuous development history inevitably evokes memories of Deep Down, another much-hyped Capcom game that never reached players’ hands.
Currently, most of what we know about Pragmata stems from Capcom’s promotional material, which bills the game as “an all-new action adventure set in a near-future dystopian world on the moon, complete with a profound story and immersive setting”—a description parroted across PlayStation and Xbox store listings.
At one point, the development team shared, “It is with a heavy heart that we must further postpone the release of Pragmata. Our team is currently hard at work making the best game that we possibly can, but we need more time. We will continue to do our best to ensure that the final product is one that is worthy of your patience.”
The real question remains: is Pragmata destined for the same fate as Deep Down, or could it defy the odds like Fumito Ueda’s The Last Guardian, surprising even the most skeptical enthusiasts? There’s speculation about Capcom possibly holding out for a next-gen release. Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain—Pragmata has made a lasting impression on the gaming community, and it would be a great disservice for Capcom to let that enthusiasm fade into obscurity.
