Alta, the creative minds behind “A Township Tale,” recently gave fans a sneak peek into their latest venture, “REAVE,” an intriguing dungeon-crawler still in development. The team shared some exciting updates on the game’s evolving features, including a fresh look at a new dungeon area and an enemy, both currently works-in-progress.
In the latest developer update, Alta unveiled “The Fallen Bastion,” a sprawling chamber promising a mix of open and constricted areas. Lead environment artist Sean Ellis explained, “We’ve designed this space to have areas that are well-lit, alongside others cloaked in darkness, perfect for ambushing competitors or evading enemies.”
At the heart of this new dungeon lies a magical pedestal. Here, players can initiate a boss fight—currently against a formidable spider, which serves as a provisional challenge while the team fine-tunes the game for a more definitive boss encounter.
Alta assures players that this spider isn’t a permanent fixture, but rather a tool to help the team simulate and perfect the intensity of boss battles as they continue to refine the game.
There’s also significant progress in the overhaul of previously showcased areas, with many undergoing extensive changes. The studio notes that some of these areas might even see complete redevelopment as the project progresses.
In terms of adversaries, Alta teased gamers with a new enemy design set to replace earlier skeleton models. These will come in varying levels of difficulty, governed by their chosen weapons and armor.
“REAVE,” functioning as an extraction game, introduces “Echoes” as its in-game currency, potentially a temporary name for this vital resource. Players can collect Echoes by defeating enemies or finding them scattered throughout the environment. These Echoes are essential for unlocking special loot rooms and enabling players to exit dungeons, transporting them back to a social hub to sell their treasures.
For those eager to dive into the action, Alta is offering opportunities to become a tester. By joining the “REAVE” Discord community, keen players can snag a chance to play, with limited testing slots becoming available periodically. While the exact release date remains under wraps, Alta has confirmed that they’re aiming to support Quest 2, other advanced VR systems, and PC VR headsets.
