Holydh, a VR enthusiast and modder, has brought something exciting for gamers who love a bit of nostalgia: a plugin called the GTA: San Andreas Definitive Edition – 6DoF UEVR. This nifty tool gives fans the ability to dive into San Andreas with VR support on their PCs, specifically through the Steam version.
The journey to get San Andreas into VR hasn’t been straightforward. Back in August, there was news that the VR version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas promised for the Meta Quest was delayed indefinitely. With Rockstar focusing on other projects, it seemed unlikely we would soon see Big Smoke’s fast food antics in virtual reality. This delay followed a series of challenges for Rockstar, including leaks and a less-than-ideal launch for the remastered editions of their classic games, including San Andreas.
Holydh’s addition isn’t just about transferring the game’s old controls into a virtual world. Players can now enjoy a first-person perspective with six degrees of freedom (6DOF) for motion controls. The experience also feels more refined with enhanced camera movements both during play and in cutscenes. This is all thanks to an improved variant of Praydog’s UEVR injector, which broadens VR compatibility to many PC games running on Unreal Engine 4.8 and newer.
For those curious to watch the mod in motion, there’s a video demonstration available. However, before diving in, gamers should know that the mod runs only on the Steam version of San Andreas Definitive Edition. If you’re using the Epic Games Store or Rockstar Launcher versions, you’re out of luck for now.
Legal concerns often surround mods, especially with companies like Rockstar, who have been quick to protect their IP in the past. The infamous case of the Luke Ross VR mod for GTA 5 brought some of these issues to light, primarily because it was monetized. Holydh, however, is confident this new mod will dodge legal troubles as it doesn’t require players to part with any cash and doesn’t include Rockstar-owned files.
For more details on this mod and the UEVR tool, gamers can check out the Nexus Mods page. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer to the series, this mod offers a fresh way to experience the streets of San Andreas.
