Nintendo is gearing up to reopen pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the U.S. and Canada after halting them shortly following the console’s debut. Initially, the company paused these pre-orders due to concerns about tariffs and the shifting landscape of the market. This stoppage extended to Canadian customers as well.
Starting April 24, fans eagerly waiting in both countries will have another chance to reserve their Switch 2. This aligns with expectations from industry insiders who predicted the timeline for the resumption. Fortunately for gamers, the price tag remains unchanged at $450 in the U.S. and CAD$630 in Canada. Additionally, the cost of the popular Mario Kart World bundle stays put.
Nintendo is sticking to the previously announced launch date for the Switch 2, set for June 5. However, there are some price hikes in accessories to be aware of. The Joy-Con controllers will now be $95, up from $90, while the Pro Controller’s price increases to $85 from $80. The Switch 2 Camera also sees a $5 increase, now priced at $55.
This decision to restart pre-orders comes after the Trump administration decided to postpone imposing broad tariffs on imports for 90 days. Although the tariffs still apply to China, Nintendo’s production in Vietnam and other nations means costs shouldn’t be affected immediately. The company has been preparing for the Switch 2 launch by gathering stock in North America for several months, preventing the first wave of consoles from being impacted by these potential tariffs.
While the current situation remains fluid, there’s a possibility that further changes could affect future batches of the Switch 2. If tariff landscapes shift again, Nintendo might have to adjust prices depending on production and shipping origins.
