It seems that Ubisoft, the well-known French publisher, is diving into the battle royale scene once again with a new game. According to some insider information, this project, which is being referred to as “Scout” during its development phase, bears a striking resemblance to the hugely popular Apex Legends. So much so, one might say Ubisoft is aiming directly at fans of Respawn and EA’s creation. The art style of Scout even features elements that echo what we’ve seen in Apex Legends.
There’s a strategic reason behind Ubisoft’s move. Word on the street is that they’re targeting players who might be drifting away from Apex Legends due to a reported dip in its financial performance, as acknowledged by Electronic Arts. One insider suggested that Ubisoft sees a chance to attract these players by introducing a new hero-based battle royale game into the market.
Ubisoft is no stranger to experimenting with free-to-play battle royales. Some might remember their previous effort, Hyperscape, which launched in 2020 but unfortunately didn’t last long and shut down after just a year and a half. This new development for Scout comes shortly after Ubisoft decided to discontinue their free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends shouldn’t be too worried just yet. A refreshed version of the game, dubbed Apex Legends 2.0, is anticipated to arrive sometime after April 2026, suggesting EA isn’t stepping back from the battle royale landscape anytime soon.
