Onward, the tactical military-simulation shooter developed by Downpour Interactive—a company now under Meta’s wing—is on the verge of rolling out a significant 2.0 update. Fans of the game have been eagerly anticipating this for quite some time since it’s been nearly a year since the last major update.
Despite some lighter updates over the past year, Downpour Interactive has certainly not deserted Onward. Back in February, the ‘Mercenary’ update introduced a new Player vs. Environment mode along with several graphical enhancements, keeping the game fresh for its players.
Now, the buzz is all about the upcoming 2.0 update, touted by Meta in a recent blog post as the game’s “biggest update ever.” The update promises a wealth of new content, including what Meta describes as a “massive graphical overhaul” across weapons and equipment. Players can also look forward to a new Operator system featuring 20 fresh characters and some exciting new maps. More detailed information about this update is expected to surface very soon.
This announcement comes on the heels of some turbulence within the gaming industry. Downpour Interactive faced significant layoffs in 2023, and just before that, the studio’s founder and CEO, Dante Buckley, who established the company in 2015, stepped down.
For those unfamiliar, Onward first made its debut on Steam Early Access back in 2016. It later became available on the original Oculus Quest in 2020. This game is renowned for its realistic squad-based gameplay and an incredibly authentic depiction of real-world firearms.
If you’re curious to dive deeper into Onward, you can find more details on the Horizon Store page for Quest 2 and above, or on Steam if you’re using a PC VR headset. The game is typically priced at $25.
