AMD has brushed off whispers about developing a 32 GB version of its Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU. Recently, rumors started swirling from a Chiphell leaker suggesting that a beefier 32 GB variant of the RX 9070 XT might hit the shelves this year. This sparked interest, especially since the buzz was that it would fall under the ‘Gaming’ series rather than AMD’s PRO lineup.
However, AMD’s Frank Azor put the speculation to rest, responding directly to Techpowerup on X that a 32 GB RX 9070 XT isn’t on the horizon:
“No, the 9070 XT card is not coming in 32 GB capacity.” – Frank Azor (@AzorFrank), February 13, 2025
Instead, gamers can look forward to the Radeon RX 9070 XT equipped with 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. This makes sense analytically, as it’s questionable whether the GPU could really utilize a 32 GB upgrade for significant gaming performance benefits. Although there were whispers that such a variant could cater to AI workloads while handling gaming, the reality seems different.
AMD has never released a 32 GB gaming GPU, which aligns with the notion of not overloading a higher mid-range GPU with such an abundant memory capacity that it might not fully exploit. The expectation is that the RDNA 4 lineup, with the RX 9070 XT heralded as the flagship sporting the Navi 48 GPU, will not exceed 16 GB in VRAM capacity. Lesser models, like the RX 9070 and those based on Navi 44, will naturally offer scaled-down specs and, consequently, lower performance.
Mark your calendars because AMD plans to officially unveil the RX 9000 series on February 28. During this announcement, enthusiasts will get the inside scoop on specifications, pricing, and firsthand performance metrics. Following this, the cards are slated to hit the market in early March. Interesting timing, as NVIDIA is also expected to launch its GeForce RTX 5070 during the same period. Frank Azor hinted previously that AMD’s 70-class GPUs are ready to challenge NVIDIA’s counterparts head-on. The showdown between the RX 9070 XT or RX 9070 and NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 Ti or RX 5070 is about to heat up, promising some exciting comparisons.
