A seasoned analyst suggests that if the Nintendo Switch 2 debuts in the first half of 2025, the PlayStation 5 might outpace it in terms of U.S. sales. Mat Piscatella from Circana also anticipates that the initial demand for Nintendo’s eagerly awaited next-generation console will surpass supply, potentially causing several months of shortages.
### Can PS5 Outshine Switch 2 in U.S. Sales if Supply Matches Demand?
Piscatella didn’t elaborate much on why he believes the PS5 would surpass the Switch 2 in its debut year, other than pointing to potential supply issues and a possible late 2025 launch. It leaves us curious whether his forecast would differ if Nintendo manages to avert any hardware supply challenges.
It’s an intriguing prediction, especially given that the PS5 is well into its lifecycle. However, if Grand Theft Auto 6 hits the shelves this year, we could see a significant spike in Sony console demand.
“I project Nintendo’s upcoming hardware to sell around 4.3 million units in the U.S. in 2025, assuming it launches in the first half. This figure represents roughly one-third of all console hardware units sold that year, excluding PC Portables,” Piscatella shared on Bluesky. “Ultimately, sales will hinge on production capabilities and decisions. I still foresee the PlayStation 5 leading in total hardware sales in the U.S. for the year.”
