Animal Company, a free-to-play title available in early access on Quest, has consistently topped Quest’s earnings charts for several weeks, finding itself in a tight race with the perennial favorite, Gorilla Tag. Inspired by the popular Lethal Company, Animal Company isn’t just maintaining its presence—it’s thriving.
This game has achieved something remarkable; alongside Another Axiom’s Gorilla Tag, it has surpassed 100,000 user reviews on Quest. Last March, Gorilla Tag was the first to reach that milestone, establishing itself as the platform’s most successful game by both the number of reviews and revenue.
Wooster Games crafted Animal Company by blending Gorilla Tag’s unique movement controls with the survival elements found in Lethal Company. Since announcing over 1 million monthly active users just last month, Animal Company has seen its reviews nearly double, reaching the 100,000 mark at an impressive pace.
Just a month ago, the game had around 60,000 reviews in the Horizon Store, while Gorilla Tag boasted over 140,000. In just four weeks, Animal Company skyrocketed to more than 108,000 reviews, while Gorilla Tag added only about 6,000 during the same period.
Data from VRDB, an independent data aggregator, highlights a significant increase in user reviews starting in mid-March. Should this trend continue, Animal Company might soon surpass Gorilla Tag as Quest’s most popular game by user reviews, though other factors like engagement and user metrics also play a role in determining popularity.
Gorilla Tag remains the top game on Quest, consistently drawing daily and monthly active users. However, Animal Company is closely following its lead. For true success, Wooster Games not only needs to amass users but also convert that momentum into revenue—a detail the studio hasn’t disclosed since activating microtransactions in September.
Last month, Wooster Games told Road to VR that their introduction of in-app purchases has put them in a “strong and healthy position.” The studio stated that since September, their revenue has steadily increased month-over-month, more than doubling since December. The real surprise is the game’s popularity—Animal Company boasts over 1 million active users monthly, a fourfold increase since December.
Meanwhile, the Quest platform is undergoing significant changes with the introduction of Meta’s new $300 mixed reality headset, Quest 3S. Meta has noted that this has led to a surge in younger players and free-to-play content, boosting revenue from in-app purchases seen in games like Animal Company and Gorilla Tag.
The big question now is whether Animal Company’s surge in users will lead to long-term engagement and revenue growth. We’re eagerly waiting for Wooster Games to reveal how these metrics translate financially, which will offer a clearer view of Quest’s highest-earning games. If the figures resemble Gorilla Tag’s reported earnings from last June, they might already be in the millions.
