If you love taking your Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 mods into online matches, there’s some disappointing news on the horizon. Saber Interactive, the game’s developer, has announced that as of December, mods will no longer be allowed in public sessions due to technical issues affecting even players without mods.
This upcoming adjustment was detailed in a thoughtful Steam post by Space Marine 2’s game director, Dmitriy Grigorenko. He kicked off the message by expressing that the team is not against mods in any way.
“We designed the game to be moddable from the outset,” Grigorenko explained. “That’s why our game pack files aren’t encrypted. It’s always a delight for me as a developer to witness the creativity of our community. Mods are fantastic and they are sure to extend the life of this game.”
However, Grigorenko pointed out the challenges, saying, “We, as developers, need to ensure the game’s stability and strive for a seamless experience for everyone. Our data indicates that a significant number of recent server stability issues are due to mods, impacting even players who aren’t using mods themselves. There have been reports of save file corruption when playing alongside players using mods.”
As a result, come December’s big update, you won’t be able to join public online sessions if you’ve got mods installed. Despite this, Saber has reassured players that mods will still be welcome in private ops lobbies, with custom Eternal War lobbies also supporting mods when they’re introduced.
The aim, really, is to allow modders a space to enjoy their creations with friends without affecting non-modding players in public matches. Seems fair, right? Ideally, this should keep everyone content, though as we know, changes in the gaming world can be a bit rocky.
Grigorenko further mentioned, “We will also provide an easy access point to our backend for games with mods installed, so modders won’t need to hack the game executable with every patch. If we accidentally disrupt this modding pathway, we’ll fix it. We’re also planning to release some of our tools to modders to facilitate easier mod development.”
This is good news, as it will make things simpler for Space Marine modders, even if they can’t flaunt their mods in public sessions. So, gear up and enjoy those personal battles with your crew.
