With the June release of its eagerly awaited Version 1.0, VR’s beloved combat simulator, Blade & Sorcery, seems to be moving forward. Developed by Warpfrog, this marks the completion of a significant chapter. However, the wheels of innovation aren’t stopping. Warpfrog has revealed that they’re diving headfirst into their next project, promising it will be as “highly moddable” as their acclaimed physics-driven combat game.
While specifics remain under wraps, the team at Warpfrog hinted to Road to VR that the new endeavor will indeed be another VR experience. Fans can expect the signature Warpfrog elements: physics-heavy interactions and a strong emphasis on realistic simulation. What’s more, the studio assures that this new title will maintain the same high level of modding flexibility as Blade & Sorcery.
For those familiar with Blade & Sorcery, modding is more than just an afterthought. The game supports easy mod development, with both manual options and integration with Nexus Mod Manager. This accessibility lets players tweak everything—from adding flashy sparks when weapons meet, to importing entirely new user-generated maps and armaments, crafting unique gameplay experiences.
Warpfrog had previously mentioned in a conversation with Meta, back in October, that they had hit the limits of their old framework during the extensive early access period of Blade & Sorcery. This has driven them to adopt a new architecture for their upcoming project.
“We had to untangle some spaghetti code and look at scalability,” they shared. “Basically, it involved building something brand new for a new engine. We’ve started crafting a new framework which promises to be much faster for our next game. This time, the framework is designed with the entire team in mind, marking the first occasion we’re embarking from start to finish with a solid team aboard.”
Expectations from Warpfrog are, to put it lightly, quite high. What began as a solo venture by developer ‘KospY’ has blossomed into a nearly 30-member strong team. This expansion promises even greater things to come.
The June update didn’t just end with the technical polish. Blade & Sorcery evolved beyond its visceral combat simulation with the introduction of ‘Crystal Hunt’, a story-driven mode that enriches the game with narrative depth, upgrade systems, and a vast, more cohesive world. This shifted it from a pure combat sandbox into a full-fledged adventure game.
Warpfrog’s announcement on Steam captures their excitement: “As for what lies ahead for Warpfrog… this is where the fun truly kicks off. We’ve gained so much experience over these past five years, and we can’t wait to unveil what’s next. Your support is what lets us forge ahead, creating bigger and better games than ever.”
