In the past week, there’s been a whirlwind of leaks revealing what could be the final design of Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2. But the buzz hit a new high yesterday when Dbrand unexpectedly released a complete 3D version of the Switch 2. This render featured their updated Killswitch protective case, initially designed for handheld PCs, now tailored for the Switch 2. Adam Ijaz, the CEO of Dbrand, explained in an interview with The Verge that they crafted their design using a precise 3D scan of the actual Switch 2 hardware. According to him, the device measures around 270mm in width with the Joy-Cons attached (200mm without them), stands 116mm tall, and is 14mm thick.
As we dive into more specifics, this anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 boasts a larger 8-inch screen, which is a step up from the Switch OLED’s 7.2-inch and the original Switch’s 6.2-inch displays. An interesting addition is an extra “C” button on the right Joy-Con, presumably for capturing content. It also features Joy-Con controllers that can be detached magnetically and have a more pronounced curve. Additionally, you’ll find USB-C ports at both the top and bottom, along with a sturdy U-shaped kickstand reminiscent of improvements seen in the Switch OLED model.
With rumors flying high that we’re just a few months away from a Q1 2025 launch, the design of the Switch 2 seems like a natural progression from the Switch OLED. However, it’s unlikely to sport an OLED screen. Most leaks suggest this 8-inch display will use a 1080p IPS LCD, hopefully a huge upgrade over the existing Switch LCD.
When it comes to Dbrand’s approach to the Killswitch Switch 2 case design, they’ve diverged from creating a full-body enclosure like those developed for others, like the Steam Deck. Because of the new detachable Joy-Cons, Dbrand has designed the case to split into segments, which are then held together with an eye-catching teal bungee cord. Known for their quality in phone and handheld cases, Dbrand seems poised for success with this new venture.
For those of you eagerly awaiting a more authentic, untouched glimpse of the Nintendo Switch 2, we aren’t quite there yet. Still, the leaked specs from Dbrand do align with what was seen in a 3D-printed mock-up sent to the YouTube channel SwitchUp. This should give fans a rough idea of how the upcoming device might look and feel.
Lastly, this significant leak from Dbrand—likely unhindered by any non-disclosure agreements—suggests that an official reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2’s announcement and release date could be right around the corner. Earlier statements indicated a launch by the end of 2024, and Nintendo has earmarked March 2025 as the deadline for complete Switch 2 details. Considering there’s not much time left, accessory creators like Dbrand are gearing up production and building anticipation for Nintendo’s new hybrid console.
