Sega recently gave us a sneak peek at the much-anticipated Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, their latest venture into the racing world with everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog and his pals. The company dropped a new trailer that gives players a look at the characters drivers can expect to see on the racetrack. Additionally, they’ve set the date for a network test, so some lucky fans will be able to take Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for an early spin.
Sonic has quite a legacy when it comes to racing games. From the Sonic Drift series from way back in the 90s to the groundbreaking Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, the franchise galloped its way through multiple titles. Though Team Sonic Racing, the last console feature, received mixed reviews, Sega is determined to make a strong comeback with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. After its initial tease at The Game Awards in 2024, enthusiasts are finally witnessing the gameplay in action.
During the State of Play event on February 12, a fresh trailer dropped for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. This sneak peek allowed fans to glimpse the expansive roster of racers ready to hit the tracks. Familiar characters like Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Knuckles, Tails, Shadow, and Amy took center stage, while others such as Silver, Omega, Jet the Hawk, Cream the Rabbit, Vector, Charmy, Big the Cat, and even Sage from Sonic Frontiers made an appearance. The developers have promised that this will be the largest collection of racers in the series to date.
For those eager to try it out, there’s a network test on the horizon. As revealed on the PlayStation Blog, PS5 players can dive into some features beginning February 21. It’s an exciting opportunity not too far away, allowing fans a chance to see what the new game truly holds. The blog didn’t mention if other platforms would be getting similar network tests, keeping those details under wraps for now.
Beyond the massive lineup of racers, the developers are introducing some intriguing features. Players can look forward to using Travel Rings, which allow leaders in the race to warp everyone into a different world, adding a new layer to the racing experience. This feature aims to keep each race fresh and engaging. Also, fans will recognize the return of transformation elements from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. The inclusion of Extreme Gear lets players race on hoverboards, reminiscent of the Sonic Riders games, and there are new customization options and Gadgets to explore as well.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is shaping up to be a powerhouse in the series, promising a host of exciting features and extensive gameplay for fans. With the network test scheduled soon, the anticipation grows for a full release date announcement across PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It’s safe to say that Sonic fans have a thrilling few months ahead.
