nDreams, known for crafting the thrilling arena shooter FRENZIES, recently revealed that the game is set to move out of early access later this year. However, while many were anticipating its arrival on PSVR 2, the studio has decided not to pursue this platform, opting instead to focus on other PS VR2 projects in the pipeline.
The developers shared their enthusiasm about FRENZIES’ future and the positive reception from players enjoying its unique blend of chaos during the early access phase on Meta Quest. They explained that, by honing in solely on the Meta Quest release, they aim to deliver an exceptional version of the game. Although this news may disappoint PSVR 2 fans, nDreams assures that exciting announcements for PS VR2 are on the horizon.
Initially launched in early access for the Quest 2 and newer models in October 2024, FRENZIES delivers an exhilarating VR-native experience with its fast-paced arena combat, encompassing a variety of weapons and game modes.
For those eagerly awaiting the PSVR 2 launch, this might come as a letdown. But from the developer’s standpoint, choosing to focus on the Meta Quest makes sense. The platform has seen a surge of younger users, thanks to the introduction of the $300 Quest 3S, which has spurred an increase in free-to-play content.
Samantha Ryan, Meta’s VP of Metaverse Content, expressed in February that while free-to-play is expected to become a more widespread strategy for developers traditionally relying on premium apps, it won’t completely replace them. Both models are anticipated to thrive side by side.
Economically, the gaming landscape is challenging. For nDreams, focusing on their most promising audience could offer the best return, especially after consolidating its divisions into a new studio, ‘Compass,’ following a series of layoffs.
As one of the leading XR game studios, nDreams has consistently delivered top-notch VR games. Their portfolio includes hits like Vendetta Forever, Power Wash Simulator VR, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Synapse, Fracked, Little Cities, and Phantom: Cover Ops, among others.
