Exciting news for Honkai Star Rail fans! HoYoverse has announced that some beloved characters in the game are getting revamped in the upcoming HSR 3.4 update. During a recent livestream, they revealed that Kafka, Silver Wolf, Blade, and Jingliu are scheduled for significant updates, responding to player feedback asking for these characters to be revitalized. However, the details of the changes remain a mystery for now.
If everything goes according to their timeline, we can expect the new update to roll out in early July 2025.
When these four characters first arrived in Honkai Star Rail in 2023, they were favorites among players. Kafka briefly regained the spotlight in 2024 thanks to the Acheron event. However, over time, their effectiveness and synergy within teams have dwindled. Jingliu is costly to develop yet doesn’t pack the same punch as other characters in her category. Meanwhile, Kafka hasn’t had new allies to support her damage-over-time strategy for some time, and Mydei seems like a refreshed version of Blade.
This issue of older characters becoming less effective, often referred to as “powercreep,” is something players of gacha games like Honkai Star Rail will recognize. Fortunately, HoYoverse’s games generally aren’t prone to making older characters obsolete so quickly. For instance, many of the top-tier characters from Genshin Impact’s first few years still perform well in toughest challenges. Similarly, in Zenless Zone Zero, players can continue battling formidable bosses with the starting trio of characters. These games have evolved, but they’ve managed to keep their characters viable.
However, Honkai Star Rail seems to be a different story. Characters like Bailu, Yanqing, Natasha, Hook, and Welt appear to have been sidelined, with no indication of changes on the horizon.
On a brighter note, as part of version 3.2, players will have the opportunity to choose between two free 5-star characters, Ruan Mei or Luocha, adding a bit of excitement and choice to the mix.
