Matt Forbeck, a New York Times bestselling author, known for his work on the Marvel Multiverse RPG, has teamed up with his son Marty to launch a brand-new tabletop adventure set in the beloved Minecraft universe. The adventure, titled Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper, is now open for pre-orders. It’s designed to capture the widespread allure of Minecraft’s open-world experience while introducing players to a straightforward set of role-playing rules.
Penguin Random House is behind the publication of this exciting new venture, although they’re keeping the specifics under wraps. This isn’t unusual for major IP-based tabletop releases during pre-orders. What we do know, courtesy of the book’s cover, is that it features two six-sided dice, and the listing confirms that four dice are included with the gamebook. You’ll also find a removable character sheet and a handy "rules reference" to guide you on your heroic journey. This game caters not only to solo adventurers but can also be facilitated by a game master, whimsically referred to as "your narrator" in this context.
The story unfolds in a secluded village abruptly besieged by "illagers," hostile mobs familiar to those who know the Minecraft realm well. These adversaries also played the antagonistic role in Forbeck’s 2020 novel, Minecraft Dungeons: The Rise of the Arch-Illager. Similar to a classic Dungeons & Dragons mission, players will be tasked with saving the beleaguered village by discovering and destroying the source of their troubles—the Temple of the Charged Creeper.
Previous collaborations have seen the worlds of Minecraft and Dungeons & Dragons merge, such as the youth-oriented Lightning Keep adventure. However, this particular tale is purely a creation by the Forbeck duo. Matt Forbeck’s illustrious history in crafting tabletop games and penning novels for franchises like D&D, Minecraft, Halo, and Life is Strange, not to mention his original works, lends a certain credibility and expectation. How well this game resonates with Minecraft and tabletop enthusiasts alike remains to be seen, but we’ll find out when it hits the shelves in July 2025.
For those eager to dive into this new adventure, the hardcover edition is available for pre-order on the Penguin Random House website at a price of $20.
