Marvel Rivals has announced that a new currency, called Unstable Molecules, will be needed to customize color costumes, stirring quite the conversation among players. This in-game currency can currently be acquired solely through microtransactions. Many players were initially excited after hearing about the skin customization feature in the upcoming April update, expecting it might come free, as Marvel Rivals is generally considered more generous than similar games.
Players had thought that by purchasing a legendary skin, they would automatically get access to all its color options. The original announcement mentioned visiting the in-game store to use this new feature, which led some to assume the payment was only for the skins, not for the additional color schemes.
Clarifying this, NetEase tweeted that the new color customization will specifically require Unstable Molecules. This currency is equal in value to Lattice, the main microtransaction currency, with each color scheme coming in at 600 Unstable Molecules—or about six dollars.
This pricing has sparked debate within the community. Some players argue that once a costume is bought, its different color variations should be included. Others accept the idea of monetizing additional items since Marvel Rivals already provides a good amount of free cosmetics. Meanwhile, a portion of the community doesn’t mind paying but believes the current price is too steep. They suggest a price drop, proposing that these options should be around 200 to 300 Lattice to ensure everyone can enjoy them.
While these discussions unfold, NetEase also shared some future plans. From Season 3 onward, free-to-play players will have more opportunities to earn Unstable Molecules, and these customized skins will affect Emotes, Intro Animations, and MVP highlights. Moreover, more customizable skins are planned for release with the next season, with current offerings including color variations for Psylocke’s Vengeance, Luna Snow’s Mirae 2099, Winter Soldier’s Blood Soldier, and Magik’s Punkchild.
As the conversation continues, players await the new ways to earn the currency and the upcoming enhancements in the Marvel Rivals experience.
