During the recent Game Developers Conference, Meta provided an update on the performance of its Quest marketplace, revealing that games and apps on the platform have generated over $2 billion. This number might ring a bell, as it mirrors the total disclosed over a year ago.
The Quest platform saw impressive revenue growth following its 2019 launch, particularly during the era of the Quest 2. However, in the last couple of years, the revenue increase seems to have slowed down a bit. Meta occasionally highlights revenue achievements, such as the $2 billion benchmark mentioned in September 2023. Yet, in a more recent update, the same figure was cited again.
This suggests that the $3 billion mark hasn’t been hit yet; otherwise, Meta would likely celebrate reaching that milestone. It’s reasonable to guess the current figure sits at around $2.9 billion as of March 2025.
Based on these numbers, it appears that while the Quest 2 period saw a surge in average monthly store revenue, growth has largely stalled with the introduction of the Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
In the same update, Meta shared other stats but didn’t go into much detail. They noted a 12% rise in total payments in 2024 and that users spent 30% more time each month in virtual reality compared to the previous year. When Road to VR inquired for further details about the $2 billion metric repeated in both 2023 and 2025, Meta did not respond.
To understand the current landscape, let’s consider some significant points. The Quest 2 was launched in October 2020, during the midst of COVID-19 lockdowns. This period saw people seeking new ways to stay entertained and connected while confined to their homes. The Quest 2 was also attractively priced at $300, making it cheaper than its predecessor by $100.
In contrast, the Quest 3 debuted in October 2023 with a higher price tag of $500. The device was marketed for its mixed reality features, which at launch, didn’t offer a compelling reason for many to upgrade. With sales lagging behind the Quest 2, Meta introduced the more budget-friendly Quest 3S in October 2024, once again hitting the $300 price mark. They also slashed the price of the 512GB Quest 3 model from $650 to $500.
It’s only been half a year since these pricing changes and the Quest 3S launch. More time is necessary to determine if these strategies will influence the spending growth trajectory on the Quest platform, though new tariffs from the Trump administration might impact Meta’s pricing.
Beyond the device pricing and features, Meta has pointed out a notable shift in user demographics and spending trends, revealing how these factors are reshaping the Quest store. According to Meta, there’s a growing appetite among newer and younger users for free-to-play experiences, as opposed to premium content.
