In recent years, Microsoft has seriously embraced the potential of artificial intelligence, and now we’re beginning to see how it might transform the Xbox experience. The company has revealed its innovative Muse generative AI model, which promises not only to aid in game creation but also in preserving classic Xbox games.
Muse stands out as a groundbreaking generative AI model capable of “creating consistent and diverse gameplay rendered by AI.” According to Microsoft, this technology could significantly aid developers in brainstorming creative ideas and maintaining beloved classic games for future generations. Developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios’ Ninja Theory, Muse was inspired and trained using the multiplayer battle arena game “Bleeding Edge.”
In an extensive blog post, Fatima Kardar, who serves as the corporate vice president of gaming AI at Microsoft, shared insights into the development process. Microsoft Research teamed up with Ninja Theory to craft a sophisticated world and human action model (WHAM) known as Muse. They describe it as a “first-of-its-kind generative AI model” grounded in Ninja Theory’s work on Bleeding Edge.
Kardar highlighted that Muse’s comprehensive grasp of the 3D game environment, including physics and player interactions, allows it to generate gameplay entirely powered by AI. Microsoft views this advancement as a significant leap toward AI models that could empower game developers like never before.
While the technology is still in its early stages, Kardar expressed that Muse is pushing the limits of what’s possible. Currently, it is being employed to develop a real-time AI model trained on other internally developed Xbox games. Microsoft envisions this work potentially benefiting both players and creators by reviving nostalgic games and expediting the creative process.
On the game preservation front, Kardar noted that numerous classic titles are tied to aging hardware, making them inaccessible for modern players. Thanks to Muse, Microsoft is exploring ways to update and optimize older games for various devices. This breakthrough could fundamentally reshape how we preserve and engage with classic games, making them available to a broader audience. The thought of once-lost games becoming playable on any screen with Xbox is truly an enticing prospect.
Moreover, Microsoft is also investigating how Muse could assist gaming teams in prototyping new gameplay experiences and introducing fresh content. This could mean reinventing existing beloved games or even allowing players to contribute to the creative process.
