Pixelity, a gaming studio based in Korea, has exciting news for fans of the iconic ’90s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995). They are in the process of crafting an innovative XR game drawn from this beloved series.
In a recent blog post, Pixelity revealed they’ve secured an official licensing agreement with Studio Khara from Japan to bring this vision to life. The project is ambitious, aiming to unfold over three installments that follow the anime’s 26-episode storyline. The first part is already underway and is slated for release in 2026.
If you’re among the many devoted Evangelion fans, you’ll appreciate the significance of this venture. During the 1990s, the anime revitalized the genre in Japan and left an indelible mark on subsequent works.
Set in the year 2015—interestingly, twenty years beyond its 1995 debut—the narrative centers around Shinji Ikari. This young protagonist is chosen to pilot the Evangelion, a humanoid combat machine, which serves as humanity’s last hope against the mysterious Angels threatening the futuristic cityscape of Tokyo-3.
While specific gaming platforms remain under wraps, what we do know is that players will embark on a journey through various locations, immersing themselves in the XR experience. They will traverse the same timeline as the original series, tackling missions and engaging in thrilling battles.
“The game will introduce collaboration elements, allowing players to interact with beloved Evangelion characters. This is expected to be a major draw for long-time fans,” the studio elaborates. Pixelity is promising a dynamic action-adventure experience that should resonate with fans and newcomers alike.
Since its founding in 2017, Pixelity has developed several VR games such as Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They’re also busy with other VR projects like The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
Although Evangelion has previously ventured into the virtual reality space, this marks the first official at-home VR game in the franchise. Back in 2017, Bandai Namco’s VR studio, Project i Can, launched Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls, which was a four-player attraction available at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan, albeit for a limited time.
