Less than a month after a major update, Valve has rolled out a fresh patch for Half-Life 2, addressing both audio and visual glitches while unexpectedly reversing a previous fix due to community feedback.
Back in October, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2, Valve unveiled a substantial update that delighted fans with new commentary, a documentary, and Steam Workshop support. Additionally, several long-standing bugs were finally squashed. While the majority of these improvements were embraced with open arms, speedrunners faced unexpected obstacles with the update.
In terms of fixes, the latest patch primarily resolves issues surrounding sound and screen performance. For instance, glitches that caused music and commentary to malfunction during and after level transitions are now sorted. You can also find enhancements like a slider for adjusting gamepad stick sensitivity, a remedy for gamepad buttons sticking post-save, and reduced crashes when jumping between episodes. Yet, one peculiar highlight of this patch is the removal of collision from an underwater pipe, a change seemingly aimed at appeasing speedrunners without much official commentary from Valve.
This particular change pertains to a submerged tube located in the sewers of the Route Kanal sequence. Prior to this update, speedrunners hit a roadblock due to newly enforced collision, which hindered their established shortcuts. Notably, this invisible barrier has always been a staple in the Xbox 360 version, whereas its absence on the PC version allowed players to exploit the environment to bypass certain game mechanics.
Undoubtedly, the challenge of updating a classic like Half-Life 2 without introducing new issues is monumental for any developer. Nevertheless, while it’s not unusual for patches to address new problems, Valve’s decision to revert a fix specifically to cater to a niche part of its fanbase might come as a surprise. Typically, everyday players won’t be affected by the removal of this barrier, given that they follow the intended gameplay path of flooding the room to access the pipe. This rollback, however, is a nod of goodwill aimed at the speedrunning community.
