Nintendo has shed some light on the Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller, indicating that it might experience certain limitations when used for games not included in the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics app. This wireless controller made its debut during the April 2 Nintendo Direct event, which showcased the Nintendo Switch 2 along with its upcoming features and games.
Gamers can choose between two Nintendo Switch Online plans, priced at $19.99 and $49.99 per year. The basic plan provides access to online multiplayer and a selection of classic games from systems like the NES, SNES, and Game Boy. The premium Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack not only includes these perks but also throws in free DLC for various games and a wider range of classic games from consoles such as the Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis. Furthermore, those who subscribe to the Expansion Pack tier will gain access to select GameCube games on the Nintendo Switch 2 from the start, including titles like SoulCalibur 2, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, and F-Zero GX.
A Nintendo representative, in response to an inquiry by Nintendo Life, mentioned that the GameCube controller might not work seamlessly with other Switch 2 games. It’s specifically tailored for the Nintendo Classics app, and is an alternative way to enjoy these older titles along with the new Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. However, since the GameCube controller lacks the full range of buttons and modern features present in other controllers, it could face compatibility hiccups when trying to run other games on the Switch 2. Additionally, Nintendo has confirmed that this new GameCube controller is exclusive to the Switch 2 platform and won’t work with the original Switch model.
Interestingly, if fans still possess the old wired GameCube controllers, they will be able to connect to the Switch 2 using a GameCube Controller Adapter. Although both the original Joy-Con and Pro Controller are compatible with the Switch 2, they too might encounter similar setbacks as the GameCube controller.
Nintendo remains committed to enriching its library on the Nintendo Switch Online service by regularly adding new classic games each month. Following the Switch 2’s release on June 5, players should see more GameCube classics being incorporated into the service, with games like Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Chibi-Robo, Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, and Super Mario Sunshine joining the roster at a later date.
