He promised he’d return, and true to his word, he has. More than three decades after “Terminator 2” made its cinematic debut, an indie game developer has brought us “Terminator 2D: No Fate,” an action-packed side-scroller inspired by James Cameron’s explosive sequel.
Creating video games based on movies has always been a bit of a gamble, with results that vary widely. These adaptations aren’t as common as they used to be, but one developer believes they’ve cracked the code with “Terminator 2D: No Fate.” This retro-styled game takes its cues from the 1991 Arnold Schwarzenegger hit and strives to capture the essence of the original film.
Bitmap Bureau, the brains behind this project, describes it as “a love letter to the 80s/90s arcade games,” and they reckon it’s the kind of game we should have had when we were younger. Judging by the trailer, they seem to be on point.
That’s not to say we didn’t have fun with those other “Terminator 2” games back in the day. Bethesda’s first “The Terminator” managed to chew up a significant amount of our time. However, many of the licensed T2 games felt more like a rapid recap of the movie’s highlights.
Bitmap Bureau is taking a different approach, aiming to recreate the film from start to finish. It combines the visual flair of a 90s arcade game with the advanced capabilities of modern PCs. That thrilling truck chase scene? Absolutely worth experiencing.
One aspect that stands out is the game’s promise of multiple endings. Just like James Cameron’s movie, which offered two conclusions depending on the cut, this game teases some alternate outcomes. We’re secretly hoping for a scenario where John Connor takes a tumble into molten iron, causing a universe-altering paradox.
We’ll have to wait a little longer to explore these possibilities, as “Terminator 2D: No Fate” is slated for release on September 5th. Until then, if you’re itching for some mechanical mayhem, check out our top robot games. And if indie games are your thing, we’ve got recommendations there too.
