Are you all set to explore the latest trio of pinball tables in Pinball FX? Strap in as we dive into our review of the Williams Pinball Volume 8 pack!
This new DLC collection offers three iconic tables: Black Knight 2000, Earthshaker!, and Banzai Run. You can enjoy each table in its original format or experience enhancements brought to life by Zen Studios. The upgrades include a striking 3D tower and a mighty Black Knight in 3D, complemented by upgraded lighting and captivating special effects that add an extra layer of fun. Earthshaker! takes it up a notch with improved lighting, a speedy 3D convertible in the bottom left, and a sleek 3D seismograph on the bottom right. Meanwhile, Banzai Run pulls out all stops with its 3D helmet, biker, and motorcycle handgrips, making each hit feel like revving up a real ride.
The Black Knight 2000 table offers both upper and lower playfields, changing how you approach the game. Balls launch to the upper playfield first, starting above the WIN rollovers, before dropping to the lower field beside the Magna Save. To maximize your score, shoot the ball back to the upper playfield via the Skyway Ramp or Lightning Wheel Lane; here, you can’t lose the ball, enhancing your scoring potential.
While playing Black Knight 2000, your tasks include hitting all drop targets to spell KNIGHT, thereby reactivating the left kickback. Beware, as these reset if not achieved quickly, though completed bank letters are saved. Hit all targets to spell BLACK for a huge score bonus via the Skyway Ramp. Activate the spin lamp by sending the ball to the Lightning Wheel to earn random rewards, or reactivate it using the left inlane rollover.
Achieving WAR at the central rollovers triggers a Hurry Up at the Skyway Ramp, increasing value with successful shots and resetting after reaching 1.5M. Lowering the Drawbridge by hitting its three targets allows ball locking, setting the stage for a thrilling multiball once three balls are locked. Spell WIN using rollovers to boost multipliers and fire the RANSOM shots at the Drawbridge.
The second table, Earthshaker!, invites players to predict earthquakes as they visit different zones. Skillfully launching the ball on the plunger lane’s spiral pathway can rack up impressive bonuses. For randomized rewards, aim for the Shelter sinkhole; prizes range from extra points to a rapid multiball. Increase jet bumper scores with loop shots.
Objective-wise, flashing ZONE targets and lanes must be hit to light the ball lock at the shelter. Lock two balls, then send a third down to start the multiball, lighting up the center ramp to target the cross-ramp for a jackpot. Multiball awards the table’s trophy, which we’ll discuss later. Hit the center ramp for a timed bonus by raising the captive ball value. The quick multiball introduces two balls into play, perfect for swiftly boosting your score.
Last but not least, Banzai Run offers a speedy ride as you race against opponents for the #1 spot. Engage Red Hot, Blue Beard, or Yellow Belly by hitting their respective targets. For a face-off with the Green Machine, target the green ones. Successfully challenge these competitors, and you’ll move to the vertical playing field at the top, an unusual use of the backglass typically reserved for table titles and art.
This area, called Banzai Hill, requires you to guide the ball to the finish line in the vertical field’s upper left corner. Defeat all racers to reach rank #2 and unlock a multiball segment. During multiball, the Time Lock feature lights up, and you need the center eject hole to lock one ball. Achieving the jackpot involves locking one ball and ascending Banzai Hill with another to challenge the King of the Hill at the top center.
Additionally, there’s a secluded zone on the vertical playfield’s top right, accessible during the activated Freestyle Course. Once active, the small ball is automatically sent to various targets. Prior victories in the regular course allow Freestyle Course challenges. Hit the left and right table sides for lap additions or use ramps for double laps when lit.
And now, let’s touch on the trophies! In Williams Pinball Volume 8, part of the Additional Tables #6 DLC, you get three trophies, one for each table: reach Rank #1 in Banzai Run, spell BLACK and navigate the Skyway on Black Knight 2000, and finish zones/start multiball in Earthshaker!.
So, in essence, Williams Pinball Volume 8 brings together Black Knight 2000, Earthshaker!, and Banzai Run, all playable in their authentic form or with Zen Studios’ signature enhancements, including 3D features and improved lighting. Plus, it’s a Cross-Buy DLC pack priced at $14.99, allowing downloads for both PlayStation 4 and 5 versions of Pinball FX.
