A recent major discount on the PSVR 2 has significantly boosted its holiday sales on Amazon US, far exceeding expectations by selling nearly five times more units compared to the previous year.
During the Black Friday and holiday sale, the PSVR 2’s Horizon bundle saw a hefty reduction in price, slashing 42% off its original cost and bringing it down to a tempting $350 from the usual $550.
As one might guess, this impressive markdown spurred sales far beyond initial predictions. Against the backdrop of last year’s figures, this year’s sales on Amazon US during the 2024 holiday season surged to almost five times their previous peak.
It’s worth remembering that during the 2023 holiday season, the headset didn’t really feature any standout sales. Generally, if a product’s price is halved, you might anticipate sales to double in response. However, the PSVR 2 showcases a dramatically different dynamic between pricing and consumer interest.
Kicking off the sale before Black Friday, Sony extended this deal into the new year. The prolonged discount duration hints at a possible strategy to clear out stock, perhaps in preparation for a new iteration or bundle, or even a cost-effective redesign. While some speculate that Sony might be attempting a rapid sale of remaining units due to possible waning enthusiasm, I believe the PSVR 2 will stick around through at least the current console cycle. Even if Sony doesn’t prioritize it heavily during this time, it’s unlikely they’ll discontinue such an innovative product so soon.
