Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene, famous for pioneering the battle royale craze with PUBG, is back with another ambitious venture. He’s unveiling a series of smaller games leading up to his next big project, with Prologue being the first in line. This fresh survival game tosses you into expansive, realistically crafted worlds full of challenges. Slated for an early access release soon, Prologue is currently hosting a playtest on Steam, offering an early taste for those eager to dive in.
At first, Prologue might seem like a typical survival game. You’re alone in this enormous landscape, managing basic needs like hunger and warmth, with the main goal being to reach a beacon on a distant weather station tower. Yet, as straightforward as it sounds, Prologue is remarkably intense. Although it doesn’t let you build grand fortresses or fend off hordes, it immerses you in solitude and rugged environments, delivering a survival experience that’s both harsh and mesmerizing. My time with the game at PlayerUnknown Productions earlier this year left a lasting impression.
In Prologue, you’re on your own, with minimal help. You’ll start from a basic shelter, grabbing a few essential tools and a map with a compass. These are vital for navigating the terrain and finding other cabins, which are few and far between in the sprawling 8×8 kilometer map. Besides the cabins, the weather station is the only notable structure you’ll encounter.
The changing weather presents another layer of challenge. Rain transforms pathways into sluggish mud pits, and blizzards drastically cut visibility while plunging temperatures. Without adequate clothing or shelter, the cold can quickly spell doom.
If Prologue piques your interest, now’s the time to join its latest playtest. Starting in February, PlayerUnknown Productions has been running these monthly tests, and the one in April is up and running until April 14. There’s an open sign-up process through the game’s Discord, and keys are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Curious about what Greene envisions for Prologue and the larger Project Artemis? I’ve got an interview with him discussing his goals. For more gaming content, check out our picks for the best open-world and single-player PC games available now.
