Rec Room continues to impress with its lineup of first-party adventures, designed for both friends and strangers to dive into together. Their latest offering, ‘Run the Block’, has arrived, drawing inspiration from the beloved Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio, released back in 2000.
Dropping on December 11th, this multiplayer mini-game quickly gathered momentum, attracting over a million players eager to take on the challenge. Much like Jet Set Radio, ‘Run the Block’ invites up to ten participants to navigate an urban landscape with flair and agility, all while engaging in a race infused with parkour elements.
Though it might lack Jet Set Radio’s signature rollerblades from the early 2000s, ‘Run the Block’ makes up for it by incorporating dynamic elements such as running, jumping, and grinding along vast lines throughout the cityscape. Players get the chance to leave their mark with graffiti tags in this creatively chaotic city environment.
Over the past year, Rec Room has seen fewer first-party game releases compared to its history. The standout release during this period was the charming pet farming simulator, ‘My Little Monster’. Alongside this, Rec Room has been immersing users in branded experiences, with content like avatar packs from the ‘Monster High’ series and elements from Bungie’s acclaimed first-person shooter, Destiny. This year has largely been about enhancing their creator suite, empowering users to generate their own intricate worlds and sell assets within the platform’s creator economy. Plus, the introduction of full-body avatars earlier this year has significantly expanded customization options.
In November, Rec Room broadened its accessibility by launching on the Nintendo Switch, adding to its extensive list of supported devices like PC VR, all Quest models, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation.
