Showtime is diving back into the Dexter universe with their upcoming prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, and fans are buzzing about the newly released trailer.
Even though Dexter wrapped up over ten years ago, the appetite for revisiting beloved TV shows is stronger than ever. Back in 2022, Dexter: New Blood rekindled interest by carrying on the story a decade after the original series. Now, Paramount and Showtime are taking us on a journey back to the origins with Dexter: Original Sin. If you haven’t caught up with New Blood, be warned — spoilers are ahead, as the prequel intriguingly ties back to the sequel. Consider yourself cautioned!
The trailer kicks off with familiar scenes from the end of New Blood, featuring a pivotal moment with Dexter lying in the snow, shot by his son, Harrison. At the hospital, as he hovers between life and death, memories of his past flood back to him, setting the stage for our prequel adventure. Set in 1991 Miami, Original Sin introduces us to a young Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson. The story explores his transformation from an ordinary student into a killer with a cause. The official synopsis hints at his struggle to control his dark desires, propelling him to develop a ‘Code’ under his father Harry’s guidance, skillfully played by Christian Slater.
Harry’s regimen aims to target those deemed a threat to society while keeping Dexter off law enforcement’s radar. Dexter finds himself balancing his sinister side with his new role at the Miami Metro Police Department as a forensics intern — a scenario ripe with tension and intrigue.
While Michael C. Hall returns to lend his voice to the character, fans of Buffy will be thrilled to see Sarah Michelle Gellar make a guest appearance. As it’s a prequel, we know Dexter’s fate is secure, but that doesn’t mean the ride won’t be thrilling.
Plus, viewers are eager to see if the prequel series sheds any light on Dexter’s mysterious fate at the end of New Blood. With another sequel, Resurrection, on the horizon, speculation is rife about whether we’ll see Dexter waking up hale and hearty by the conclusion of Original Sin. You’ll have to tune in when it premieres on Paramount+ on December 13 to find out!
