Developer BioWare currently has a team with fewer than 100 members, a significant drop from over 200 employees just two years ago, as reported by Bloomberg. This downsizing is partly due to recent layoffs, as BioWare shifts its focus toward the upcoming installment in the Mass Effect series. Among those affected by this strategy change are writer Trick Weekes and producer Jenn Cheverie.
Another factor in this headcount reduction is the reassignment of BioWare staff to other studios within Electronic Arts. Initially, employees believed these projects would be temporary assignments, but it seems many transitions turned out to be permanent.
BioWare’s general manager, Gary McKay, explained that the decision comes at a point in development when the full studio’s support isn’t necessary. “We have incredible talent here at BioWare,” McKay stated, adding that they have worked hard to align many of their colleagues with suitable teams at EA where there were suitable openings.
