Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends, has announced a crackdown on content creators who breach their terms of service, even if these violations occur outside the confines of the games themselves.
Starting January 3rd, Riot will begin banning creators who engage in activities such as using offensive language or slurs directed at other players during content that features Riot’s games. This falls under their newly updated ‘Off-Platform Conduct’ terms.
The company explained in a post on its website: “This update aims to better protect players from harmful behaviors they might encounter while engaging with various aspects of their gaming journey.”
Riot clarified that these rules specifically target scenarios where their games are part of the content being produced. Although they won’t actively monitor everything on social media, they now reserve the right to impose in-game penalties when problematic content is reported. For instance, if a creator uses derogatory language against opponents or teammates during a live stream, even if it’s not through in-game chat or voice communication, Riot can still enforce penalties as if it happened in-game.
