Rumor has it that we’ll catch a glimpse of the next HDMI standard at CES 2025, as buzz grows that HDMI 2.2 is set for a grand debut alongside the latest generation of gaming GPUs.
### Anticipated Features of HDMI 2.2
CES is always a playground for technological leaps, and this year promises to introduce a new HDMI standard geared to replace today’s HDMI 2.1 ports. According to a report from ComputerBase, the HDMI Licensing Administrator is gearing up to present what they describe as a “breakthrough” technology. Although they’re tight-lipped on specifics, all signs point to the unveiling of “HDMI 2.2,” which is rumored to offer significantly improved bandwidth, resolution, and refresh rates.
The HDMI Forum has announced plans to reveal a new HDMI specification. This cutting-edge version will boast next-gen HDMI tech and increased bandwidth, paving the way for higher resolutions and refresh rates across various formats. And yes, it will come with a brand-new HDMI cable. For content creators in TV, film, and gaming, this opens up avenues for enhanced quality options and multiple distribution platforms.
While HDMI LA’s statement stops short of naming the new standard, it’s unlikely we’ll see anything less than a full version upgrade considering previous trends in HDMI developments.
Specific details on what HDMI 2.2 will bring to the table are still under wraps. However, considering HDMI 2.1 already pushes up to 48 Gbps and supports resolutions as high as 10,240 Ă— 4,320 pixels, it’s a safe bet HDMI 2.2 will exceed these benchmarks.
As of now, no GPU manufacturer has confirmed incorporating HDMI 2.2 into their upcoming releases. The latest upgrade in this arena has been with DisplayPort 2.1, which made its debut with AMD’s RDNA 3 GPU series, and there are whispers it might feature in NVIDIA’s rumoured “RTX 5000” Blackwell GPUs. Should HDMI 2.2 become official, we might see it integrated into future GPU models, but for now, we’re in the dark pending more concrete information.
