Soul Paint offers a unique virtual reality experience, merging 3D art with personal reflection. Launched at SXSW 2024, it was designed by Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit, with narration by Rosario Dawson. The experience invites you to navigate your emotions creatively by allowing you to draw in a 3D space that reflects onto your virtual form.
Utilizing body-mapping alongside VR, the creators aim to help users gain a deeper understanding of their feelings. The goal is to enhance empathy and social bonds by sharing personal experiences visually. After completing the session, you have the option to share your emotional journey with others.
I gave it a try at the NewImages Festival in 2025, during the XR Market’s 20-minute session. It kicks off with a thought-provoking question about your current emotional state. Initially uncertain, I soon found the experience to be almost spiritual. Within a serene environment, you’re encouraged to physically manifest your emotions.
The session becomes a soothing and introspective journey. Despite my lack of artistic skill, I found the process fulfilling. Participants can sketch onto their virtual body and leave a voice message at the end, allowing for the sharing of emotions that might be difficult to express verbally.
Soul Paint acts as a reflective tool in VR, offering a nuanced way to convey personal narratives. While the interaction feels somewhat linear, it provides a meditative experience with strong elements of self-awareness and user control. This is a fresh and thoughtful approach to communication, and I’m eager to see more projects like it.
At this time, there’s no confirmation about a home release for Soul Paint, but updates will follow as we learn more.
