CD Projekt, the Polish game developer behind popular titles like The Witcher series, has decided against incorporating generative AI technology in the creation of The Witcher 4. During a recent investor meeting, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski explained that concerns over intellectual property rights have led to this decision. Generative AI relies on a diverse array of existing content, some of which is copyrighted. This presents challenges in establishing the originality needed for trademarks.
Nowakowski elaborated by mentioning that last year, they formed a team specifically to explore AI’s potential in future projects. Although they are researching AI solutions and even considering developing their own custom AI models, generative AI isn’t their primary focus. He admitted that using this type of AI can be quite complex due to legal issues surrounding IP ownership.
As it stands, CD Projekt has no plans to integrate generative AI into The Witcher 4 or any upcoming projects. Back in January 2024, the company acknowledged that while AI could be beneficial in certain areas of game development, its current role is limited.
