Recently, Microsoft flagged an issue with the latest Windows 11 update that doesn’t seem to cooperate well with a handful of Ubisoft games such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Assassin’s Creed Origins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. This announcement came on November 22nd, putting quite a few gamers on alert.
According to Microsoft, if you’ve updated to Windows 11 version 24H2, you might run into some trouble. The affected Ubisoft games could become unresponsive during startup, while loading, or even in the middle of gameplay. And in some instances, you might even find yourself staring at a dreaded black screen.
Ubisoft was quick to respond with a hotfix for Star Wars Outlaws on November 21st, just after the latest stealth-focused update. Despite this effort, Microsoft has warned there might still be performance hiccups. They’ve also implemented a compatibility hold on PCs with these Ubisoft titles installed to prevent any further disruptions until a comprehensive solution is in place.
For now, Microsoft advises against manually updating to version 24H2 using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the media creation tool until these issues are ironed out.
For those caught in the glitch and unable to exit their games normally, Microsoft suggests pulling up Task Manager and ending the task via the Process tab. While this advice might seem elementary to some, apparently it’s worth reiterating.
The rollout of Windows 11 version 24H2 happened on October 1st, but it’s not clear which specific features in the update are clashing with Ubisoft’s games. Given the unpredictable nature of tech, one might whimsically speculate that perhaps it’s the “more streamlined File Explorer” causing all this fuss—whatever that entails.
