Microsoft is introducing an intriguing update to Windows 11 that will enhance how Task Manager measures CPU usage, aligning it more closely with what third-party applications offer.
This update is a game-changer for those who rely on Task Manager for system monitoring. Microsoft has recognized that the way Task Manager reports performance metrics doesn’t match up to the accuracy of third-party tools. As a response, the update will revamp how CPU utilization figures are calculated, bringing them in line with industry standards. This development promises to make Task Manager a more reliable tool for monitoring system performance.
Microsoft’s announcement made it clear: “We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools.” This means that Task Manager will soon offer CPU usage figures similar to those you would see from tools like HWINFO, reducing the need for external software. However, users will have to be patient until the update becomes available to experience these improvements firsthand.
Additionally, Microsoft is accommodating users who prefer the existing measurement system. They’ve introduced a new optional column named CPU Utility on the “Details” tab, allowing users to stick with the familiar method if they choose. These updates are part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, integrated in the 24H2 update. They will gradually be rolled out to users over time. This proactive step by Microsoft reflects their commitment to enhancing user experience and catering to a wide range of consumer needs.
